Watch: New university building topped-out on former Posh Spice restaurant site

Video: The new Nottingham Trent University building has been officially topped-out

A new Nottingham Trent University building on the former site of burned-down restaurant Posh Spice has been topped-out.

NTU bought the land that sits between pub Horn in Hand and nightclub Stealth in February 2017 with the old building demolished soon after the purchase.

Plans and artist impressions of what the new building would look like emerged in March 2017 including a formal planning application to Nottingham City Council.

In June 2017, the plans were approved by the council.

Now, the new building has been topped-out, which means the highest point of the structure has been reached and completed.

23 Goldsmith Street will be home to new offices and the Global Lounge for international students with work expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Steve Denton, the chief operating officer and registrar for NTU, said: “The topping out ceremony is a tradition in the building trade.

“We like to get on with things pretty quickly and we’ve got a great building in this.

“When it’s complete, the ground floor will be a base for our international students and then we’ve got some collaborative staff offices on the upper floors.

“It’s in a great, vibrant environment opposite our main teaching and learning building and, as ever with our buildings, this will be a great asset to the local community.”

The building is the second one GF Tomlinson Building Ltd have constructed for NTU, with the first on the university’s Clifton campus.

Director at the company Christopher Flint said: “It’s good to see the structure having progressed over the past few months and now we’re stood on the roof!

“There’s a cracking view – a great view of the other buildings NTU has got and this will sit well alongside those.

“We’ve got the rest of this year to crack on with it but it will be ready for the university to move in on schedule.”
