Tenth anniversary of Nottingam’s Relay For Life

Friends and family of people affected by cancer will walk continuous laps during an overnight vigil to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Each year local fundraising teams work together in raising £40,000 for Cancer Research UK.

All of the teams members who sign up will take it in turns to walk for 24 hours because cancer never sleeps.

One of the events founders of Relay For life, Gary Thomas, of Bulwell, got involved with the event after being inspired by the courage of his nephew Mark Groves, who died in 2005 at 20-years-old from bone cancer.

Over 10 years Gary has managed to raise an astounding £400,000 for Cancer Research UK and he said he’s not done yet.

He said this years target is £33,000 based on the 300 people already registered to take part.

As for the battle against cancer that will never stop until we find a cure, that’s the target.

Gary Thomas, co-founder of the Relay For Life.

The volunteer teams that will be at the Relay For Life range from 8 to 15 people who will take it in turns to walk around the track at the newly refurbished Harvey Hadden Stadium in Bilborough, Nottingham.

The relay will began at 1pm over the weekend with a VIP lap for any cancer survivors at the event.
