£2.5 million care facility in Mapperley is up and running

The state of the art housing facility for older people has now opened and will allow extra care for the elderly.

The £2.5 million redevelopment transformed a block of 1980s bedsits into 32 modern and accessible homes for older people.

St Andrew’s House was funded by Gedling Homes and Nottinghamshire County Council.

Unlike traditional sheltered housing, extra care allows older people to live independently as possible in a home environment with care staff are on-site 24 hours a day.

Residents have access to a range of services including a hair salon and therapy room, daily catering service, library and communal lounge and dining area, and all apartments have an emergency on-call facility.

The Council has invested £600,000 to create the extra care apartments, which forms part of the authority’s plan to create 160 extra care places in the county at a cost of £12.65m.

Extra care will also help address the expected increase in older people of the next decade.

Councillor Muriel Weisz, Chair of the Council’s Adult Services and Health Committee, said: “I’m delighted that we are now able to offer extra housing in the Gedling area, which will mean greater choice for local older people needing care and support.

Managing Director of Gedling Homes, Lynn Clayton added: “It is brilliant that we have been able to provide this facility for our tenants. A lot of work has been done to update and improve the scheme.

“By working together with the County Council we have been able to provide a modern alternative to residential care.

“Our tenants can now be as independent as they want to be, whilst safe in the knowledge that care and support is on hand should they need it.”

The scheme was runner up in the Project of the Year category for the Chartered Institute of Building at the Committed to Excellence in the East Midlands Awards, which celebrates high standards by the region’s construction industry supply chain including developers, designers and builders.
