Bryony Hollands’ death: Driver sentenced to eight years

Bryony Hollands, left, was killed in the crash.

A driver who killed a 19-year-old woman when he ran her down in Woodthorpe has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Bryony Hollands died after she was hit by a Mercedes being driven by Thomas Burney on Woodthorpe Drive on August 21.

An off-duty nurse performed CPR as she battled to save Bryony’s life, but she died at the Queens Medical Centre later that day.

Burney also hit and seriously injured Bryony’s boyfriend, Ben Evans, 20, who was walking with her at the time of the crash.

Burney, 26, of no fixed address, had already pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury to Mr Evans at an earlier hearing.

Bryony’s family have been fundraising for music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins in her memory and have so far raised £2,000.

In a moving tribute, Bryony’s father Mark Hollands previously said: “[Bryony] lit up the lives of those she met. Our loss is their loss too and the loss of those who will never know her.”

Bryony, a student from Berkshire, was in Nottingham visiting Mr Evans at the time of the tragedy.
