A man who stabbed another man five times in the back in Nottingham city centre has started a seven year prison sentence.

Nthambi Mkanda, 19, of Balmoral Road in Colwick, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday (August 11) following a five day trial.

He previously pleaded not guilty to offences of wounding with intent.

Detective Constable James Hirst said: “We are pleased with the court outcome and hope it sends the message out that it is not acceptable to carry a knife or any form of weapon in Nottinghamshire.”

The court heard how Mkanda was with friends when they became involved in an altercation with another group of men at around 2.40am on March 4.

Mkanda chased the victim along King Street and onto Trinity Square before stabbing him five times in the back.

The victim was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre where he required stitches.

Officers launched an investigation and Mkanda was identified through CCTV and subsequently arrested.
