Anniversary of seven-year-old’s death brings fresh road safety concerns

As flowers are laid out on Farnborough Road in Clifton 26 years after seven-year-old’s death, residents say more still needs to be done on road safety.

On June 23 1989 Mark Booth, seven-years-old at the time, was retrieving his football in Farnborough Road when he was hit by a car and killed.

26 years on and residents still place flowers at the scene of the incident each year but they say a similar accident could occur if safety measures aren’t enforced on the road.

Lynda Trout is the mother of one of Mark’s friends who goes to the site every year to pay her respects, she remembers the incident well.

She said: “He came to my house at 6:55pm and he was hit at 7:00pm, he just went to pick his ball up off the road and a car hit him.”

When the little boy died that was it, he died that day and so did I.

Despite measures being taken to prevent similar incidents taking place residents still say that the road is a danger for children leaving The Farnborough Academy.

The school does provide a car park but there are still a large numbers of parents who park on the side of the road.

Pete Bell who has lived on the road for 46 years thinks more needs to be done to enforce safety procedures on the road.

He said: “I think police and the authorities need to do more, it seems to be everyone’s doing something bar the enforcement.

“If enforcement has to take place for people to get the message that we don’t want any more injured children then so be it.”

Pete Bell said: “I’d just like to appeal to everyone to just think about what you are doing when you park.

“It might be a quick getaway for you but it might be a life sentence for somebody else.”
