Ashes Update: Day 1 of the Nottingham Test

England have made a steady start in their response to Australia’s 1st innings total of 60.

After Stuart Broad’s career best figures of 8-15 this morning, England are in a strong position to wrap up a series win in Nottingham.

Openers Adam Lyth and Alastair Cook looked untroubled before the lunch break and went in 13-0.

The first wicket fell just over half an hour after lunch. Adam Lyth has struggled so far this series and once again had no luck when he was caught behind after he got a thin edge off Mitchell Starc’s bowling. 32-1.

Shortly after, England were 2 down. An excellent in-swinging yorker from Starc trapped Ian Bell LBW. Bell reviewed the decision but Hawkeye showed the ball would go on to clip his leg stump.  34-2.

Root and Cook both upped the run rate and not long after, England went into the lead when Root clipped a ball back of length down the leg side for 4. 61-2.

The following over, Cook gave the Aussies an opportunity to take his wicket when Mitchell Starc got one to shape beautifully just outside the off stump. Cook edged but was dropped by Smith at slip and the ball ran away for four. 69-2.

Cook then was trapped LBW by another Starc yorker just before tea for 43. His partnership with Root was worth 64. 96-3.

England went into tea 99-3 with a lead of 39 runs. Mitchell Starc has been the only bowler in the Australian attack who has caused any real difficulty and has bowled well for his 3 wickets.
