Bereaved son helping others to cope

Elaine Harrison

Andrew Harrison was devastated when the body of his mother Elaine Harrison was found in the River Trent near Colwick Park in February 2014.

Elaine, 59, went missing from a houseboat in Castle Marina in December 2013.

At an inquest into the cause of her death. it was revealed that she had suffered a long history of depression and had contemplated suicide. She had not gone through with it because “the love of her family stopped her.”

The coroner returned an open verdict, meaning no cause of death could be fully proved.

At the time Andy said: “Mum seemed carefree and on top of the world – but deep down she was hurting so much.”

Now Andy is working for the charity Missing People, helping to co-ordinate posters and email alerts when other people disappear and he has joined Nottinghamshire Search and Rescue.

In June 2014 he cycled from Edinburgh to London to raise money for the charity.

He’s also involved Child Rescue Alerts – a national system which sends out alerts via Twitter, Facebook and mobile phones when a child goes missing.

This was used for the first time in Nottingham in March when a 14-year-old girl from Chilwell went missing – she was found within a day.

Andy added: “The best thing you can do when you lose someone is get out there putting out flyers and posters.”

“All you can do is keep the faith and keep hoping that you can find them.”
