Calls for urgent improvements to Hucknall road which regularly floods

Watnall Road near Hucknall floods 'every time there's a bit of rain'

A Hucknall road which regularly floods has been labelled as “one of the most problematic and dangerous in the whole of Nottinghamshire.”

Watnall Road (B6009) has been closed ten times in the last six weeks, councillors say.

An online petition calling for urgent improvements has received more than 500 signatures since it was set up by Ashfield Independents on Saturday (December 9).

“The road is continually flooding and is a danger to life.  Anytime there is even a small amount of rain, this road floods and is often closed, causing chaos across the town,” it says.

Councillors warn that cars have been abandoned after becoming stuck in the deep water, and fear someone could be seriously injured.

Pictures show deep water stretching across the full carriageway and pavement on a stretch just west of Hucknall.

The petition calls for Nottinghamshire County Council to look into flood mitigation measures with the Environment Agency and to install flashing warning signs.

It also asks for all gulleys on the road to be inspected and cleaned, lights to be installed on blind bends, and potholes to be fixed.

Hundreds of residents have backed a petition set up by local councillors

Cllr David Shaw (Ash Ind), who represents Hucknall West on Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Since I was elected in 2021, I have continually reported issues on this dangerous road.  Enough is enough.

“Our pleas have fallen on deaf ears but I now fear that unless urgent action is taken, this road will be a danger to life.

“Cars have been abandoned in deep water and it will not be long before someone is hurt or loses a loved one.”

Councillor Lee Waters (Ash Ind) said: “This road has got to be most problematic, dangerous road in the whole of Nottinghamshire and must be given priority for urgent upgrade.

“Cars are regularly abandoned on this death trap road, it has damaged cars, put lives in danger, caused chaos in Hucknall and we need action now.   We need urgent flood alleviation measures before it is too late.”

One comment on the petition says: “The disruption to a main carriageway every time it rains is diabolical. This needs sorting.”

Another says: “Every time it floods cars drive on the wrong side of the road, people are wading through it just to get home, and traffic is horrendous.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt or worse. This has been happening for years but recently it’s gotten worse and it needs sorting ASAP!”

Nottinghamshire County Council has been contacted for comment.
