If you see a grown man tied up in West Bridgford Asda dressed as an elf  – don’t panic.

The eye-catching character is part of a fundraising campaign by children at nearby Greythorn Primary School.

Children tied him up in the shop, asking people for donations to set him free and provide them with new library books.

The elf’s real name is Wayne Brown – a member of staff at the store who agreed to help the appeal as part of the shop’s drive to help the local community in the run-up to Christmas.

Sally MacDonald, headteacher at Greythorn Primary School, said: “We would love to give our children access to the best and widest selection of books to inspire their love for reading, writing and story-telling.

“So we’ve enlisted the help of some characters to help us with our fund-raising efforts.”

Asda general manager Tony Brennan explained that the elf would be visiting other Nottinghamshire Asda stores to help them get into the Christmas spirits.

He said, ““Each store has a staff member who spends their time out in the community helping different groups and causes.

“During the festive period, they help out at lots of Christmas fairs & fates. The elf will be helping them all to get in the festive spirit.”

MacDonald has appealed to the local community to help return the elf to its rightful home in Lapland by donating money for the library.
