A 37-year-old man who went on the run after sexually assaulting a child has been jailed.

Peter O’Brian Smith, of The Broadway in Stourbridge, Dudley, disappeared in November 2014 after committing the offences at a property in Nottingham.

He eventually handed himself in to officers in the West Midlands, exactly one year on from the day he fled.

Smith had previously admitted two counts of sexual offences against a girl under the age of 13.

He was sentenced to four years and nine months in jail at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday Aprl, 8.

The judge took Smith’s year-long bid for freedom into account and sentenced him to nine months imprisonment, to run concurrently.

Smith is also subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and will have to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
