Chinese New Year fireworks display put on hold

A Chinese New Year fireworks display that was to take place this weekend has been postponed until next month due to bad weather.

The annual fireworks display is part of the celebrations put on by the University of Nottingham’s Lakeside Arts centre to mark the start of the Chinese new year.

It was due to take place on Sunday at the centre in Highfields Park but was cancelled due to the weather and has been rescheduled for 6pm on Sunday March 8.

As well as the fireworks display Nottingham Lakeside Arts had many other Chinese activities and events on throughout February including workshops, exhibitions and performances, all celebrating different parts of Chinese culture.

Nottingham Lakeside Arts said on their website:

“Unfortunately, due to adverse weather, we were forced to cancel the Chinese New Year Celebrations and firework display on Sunday 22 February.  The wind speed and direction made it too dangerous to proceed with the display and heavy rain meant the outdoor stage was too slipperly to allow the performances to go ahead. We apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience caused.”

The Chinese New Year began on February 18 and is the year of the Sheep.
