Crime in Nottinghamshire has gone up by eight per cent.
New figures show the rise happened in the 12 months up June, outstripping the national average of a five per cent rise.
Big increases in violent crimes and sex offences are behind the rise.
The figures were released by the Office for National Statistics, which collates all official crime statistics.
We are facing financial challenges
Notts Police Deputy Chief Constable Sue Fish said: “We have experienced a slight increase in other crime types, like many other forces across the country.
“By working closely with our partners and other agencies we remain committed to reducing crime despite facing well documented financial challenges.”
Violence against the person and sexual offences have gone up by 25 per cent and 67 per cent respectively.
DCC Fish added: “We have put significant resources into ensuring that people have the confidence to come forward and report crimes, such as sexual offences to us.
“The rise is in no small part down to offences having occurred some time ago and an increased confidence victims have in a police investigation. This is a welcome development and shows people have faith they will be listened to.”
Other more positive figures show there have been less robberies and burglaries in Nottinghamshire, with these crimes down 11 per cent and eight per cent respectively.
DCC Fish said: “The fall in burglary in and robbery in Nottinghamshire is extremely encouraging and we have worked hard to reduce these types of offences through crime prevention and targeted, intelligence-led, operations which have seen prolific offenders brought to justice.”
She added that violent crime continues to be a ‘priority area’.
