Queen’s Medical Centre helipad approved by council

The proposed helipad at the Queen’s Medical Centre, a development described as ‘life-saving’ by the Nottingham Hospitals Charity, has been approved.

The new helipad is planned to help support the region’s major trauma centre and will be located on top of a multi-storey car park at the south side of QMC.

Currently there is no helipad on site which means the air ambulance has to land at the University nearby.

Patients are then transferred  to the QMC’s emergency department but this can take up to 20 minutes.

Adam Brooks, Clinical lead for QMC’s Major Trauma Centre,  said: “The first 60 minutes following a severe injury is known as the ‘golden hour’ and fast access to treatment is vital to give patients a fighting chance.”

Great Support

Nottingham Hospitals Charity is raising money to fund the development and has already raised over £1 million in donations and pledges.

Jenny Wing, head of fundraising for Nottingham Hospitals Charity said:

“We’ve received great support from people across the East Midlands so far but we still have a long way to go.”

“We need people to get behind the Saving Lives Helipad Appeal to save time and, more importantly, save lives.”

Nottingham City Council’s planning committee approved the plans on Wednesday afternoon.
