Gamers get first glimpse of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum Vega

Nottingham gamers get the first look at the new Sinclair ZX Spectrum Vega console.

The ZX Spectrum was first made in 1982 and was founded by Sir Clive Sinclair.

Sir Clive is one of the founders of Luton based company Retro Computers Ltd, the company which is bringing the ZX Spectrum back.

Now SMS Electronics in Beeston has been handed the contract to remake it into a games console that will be released later this year.

Clive Sinclair’s friend and the Chairman of Retro Computers Ltd, Dr David Levy pitched the idea to bring back the Spectrum in a more modern way.

The original ZX Spectrum sold five million copies worldwide and was one of the first main stream home computers in the UK.

The ZX Spectrum Vega is a compact version of Clive Sinclair’s original Spectrum and now it has 1,000 games already built into it.

SMS Electronics in Beeston were ecstatic to win the contract to be able to bring the Spectrum back to life.

Graham Shaw, the Operations Director of SMS Electronics said: “It’s extremely important and exciting, we were in competition with 20 other companies who also wanted to manufacture this product and we’re all extremely proud.”

We’ve got a lot of people here today having a look at the differences between what they saw 20 – 30 years ago on this particular product and what you see today.

SMS Electronics is currently manufacturing 4,000 copies of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum Vega, which is set to increase if they see a demand for the product.
