Muslim graves vandalised in Bulwell Cemetery

One of Nottingham’s well known cemeteries has been targeted by vandals over the weekend.

The attacks were reported to Nottinghamshire Police on June 28 but it is believed that the incident took place overnight.

The damage took place to Muslim and some non Muslim graves but police say it appears as though the vandals focused mainly on the Muslim graves. Around 10 graves are believed to have been damaged at the High Cemetery in Low Wood Road, Bulwell.

Mark Holland, Chief Superintendent of Nottinghamshire Police said: “Criminal damage of this nature is obviously very upsetting for the families and we are working swiftly in our efforts to identify those responsible.

This type of offence is taken very seriously and a thorough investigation is being conducted.

Chief Superintendent, Mark Holland of Nottinghamshire Police.

“Nottinghamshire Police has been liaising closely with the Muslim community in Nottinghamshire since the events in Tunisia earlier this week and we have been in close contact following the reports of these events this morning.

“I am sure everyone in Nottinghamshire will be united in their condemnation of these actions and we would urge anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact Nottinghamshire Police immediately.”

Pictures have started to appear on social media urging people to complain to the Police and Nottingham City Council. Many people have expressed their concerns on social media, one person saying: “People like this have no integrity or honour… Awful!”

Nottinghamshire Police have asked anyone for information to contact them on 101 quoting incident number 407 of 28 June.
