Inside Nottingham’s new board game cafe

A cafe which gives visitors the choice of hundreds of board games to play while sipping tea and catching up with friends has opened on Maid Marian Way.

Ludorati cafe has more than 750 board games to chose from and its owners hope to provide an alternative to technology and screen-based entertainment.

Toby Robinson, cafe operations director, said: “The concept behind the cafe is that we wanted to create a dedicated space in which people can enjoy themselves home from home, play board games, and enjoy great coffee.”

Boardgames have had a huge boom

“We thought instead of just another coffee shop we would give something more social, nowadays people are looking at their phones and iPads so its become very unsociable.”

The owners hopes to open a string of similar cafes if the Nottingham outlet is successful, he added.

Toby said: “We looked at Nottingham because of its gaming history – its associated with the castle and Robin Hood games.

“Boardgames in the last decade have had a huge boom – we’re seeing board game cafes pop up all over the world.”

Nottingham is also home to the Dice Cup board game cafe on Mansfield Road.
