A local authority has submitted plans for the demolition of the Broadmarsh car park.
As part of a £250 million revamp of the southern gateway, the car park is to be either demolished or completely refurbished.
Last month intu reaffirmed their commitment to the scheme by saying their revamp of the Broadmarsh shopping centre will go ahead this year despite a £346 million fall in profit in 2016.
The Broadmarsh car park, which is owned by Nottingham City Council, is one of the first buildings visible when entering the city from the southern side or through the train station.
A city council spokesman said: “We are exploring two possible options for how to redevelop the Broadmarsh car park – one is to refurbish it in its current state, the other is to demolish and rebuild it, but we have not committed ourselves to either option yet.
“We want to get planning permission for demolition in place so that if we decide to rebuild it we could go ahead as soon as we are ready.”
The redevelopment scheme also includes a walkway from the centre to the train station and the pedestrianisation of Collin Street.
3,000 jobs are expected to be created from the Southern Gateway scheme project and at its announcement, councillor Nick McDonald said: “I am excited about these significant developments which will massively transform the whole south side of the city.
“Our scheme will help to give a good, welcoming impression of our city to the many new visitors and leisure seekers arriving in this part of the city and it will deliver a return on the public investment being put into it.
“This is forecast to bring three million additional visitors per year to Nottingham.”
