St Ann’s Community Orchard has been picking the last of this year’s apples in celebration of National Apple Day.
October 21 is a day when apples are celebrated across the land to recognise the wealth and the variety of the fruit available in the United Kingdom.
An orchard is not only a highly productive food area, but a beautiful place to be.
Events are organised by restaurants, museums, branches of the Women’s Institute, cider makers, community orchards and garden societies all over the world.
Richard Arkwright, co-ordinator of St Ann’s Community Orchard said: “They are a big part of our culture, when you travel across the world apples are seen as almost an exotic fruit, whereas here we take them for granted. An orchard is not only a highly productive food area but a beautiful place to be”.
The St Ann’s Allotments are the oldest and largest allotment site in the world. The 75 acres of gardens contains more then 40 different varieties of apples.
Richard said: ” We make apple juice with kids and we are looking at expanding our apple juice production in future years.”.
Richard Arkwright talks to Notts TV News about this years apple collection.
