Nottingham fly-tipper blamed imaginary identical twin for dumped tyres

An Old Basford fly-tipper dumped 14 tyres in a lay-by in Mapperley and blamed it on a made-up twin.

Paul Henry, 52, of Harmston Rise, told investigators; “It’s not me, it’s my twin brother,” after the rubbish was left on Valentine’s Day last year.

Henry was convicted of fly-tipping at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court and tagged, ordered to to comply with a curfew and charged nearly £800.

A Gedling Borough Council investigation took nearly 10 months as Henry tried to divert enquiries by giving old addresses and claiming to be his own twin.

Henry was eventually tracked down and served court papers.

He pleaded not guilty but was convicted of fly-tipping after a member of the public told the court they saw him throwing black items out of a van into a ditch.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke said: “This is a great example of a member of the public standing up against fly tippers.

“If it wasn’t for the testimony of the witness and the excellent investigative work of our wardens, we would have struggled to get a conviction.

“We hope this will show people that if they do see something, tell us and we will do everything we can to prosecute these people.”
