Polife, council and BID representatives raised a purple flag at Nottingham Castle on Thursday (October 5) to celebrate.

Nottingham has been given an award for being a safe night out for the eighth year in a row.

The Purple Flag programme is an accreditation system similar to Green Flags for parks and Blue Flags for beaches.

The award is given to town centres that surpass set standards in the managing of the evening and night time economy, and is run by the Association of Town and City Management.

Nottingham’s efforts to get the status are driven by the Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID),  along with Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire Police.

Purple Flag status indicates:

  • Good wellbeing of the city, caring clean and safe.
  • High standard of transport and accessibility.
  • Variety of dining venues, chain stores and independent.
  • Having clear policies, aims and a strategy for delivering these.

Other elements that have contributed to the accreditation include taxi marshals, who supervise city centre taxi ranks on Friday and Saturday nights, and the Nottingham Street Pastors.

Nottingham City Councellor Toby Neal said: “To be awarded a Purple Flag for the eighth year running is a fantastic achievement for the city and a demonstration of our commitment to ensuring the city centre is a safe place.”

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping said: “I want people to have an entertaining, safe and enjoyable night out in well-run venues that where they can relax and have fun.”
