Nottinghamshire Nature Reserve has bred one of the rarest UK birds

Two bittern chicks have successfully been bred at a wildlife park in Nottinghamshire. There are only 80 male breeders of their species left in the UK.

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has spotted two bittern chicks at Attenborough Nature Reserve.

These heron-like birds are on the RSPB red list, meaning they are a globally threatened species.

In 2000 the trust created a reedbed for the birds to nest and worked to make sure surrounding areas were safe, including raising water levels to stop predators such as foxes, which also provided more fish.

A few bitterns had previously been spotted wintering at the reserve but none had tried to mate. However, earlier this year a male bittern was heard making its mating call.

Now the trust has spotted the two bittern chicks that have been born.
