Nottinghamshire’s Jake Ball will have to wait for his England debut after Alistair Cook announced his starting eleven for the opening test match against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

The Mansfield-born seamer, 24, was included in the initial 12-man squad but has been left out of the team as England make only one change from the core Test team that conquered in South Africa.

Nottinghamshire’s Alex Hales and Stuart Broad retain their places with James Vince replacing James Taylor.

England Starting XI

1. Alistair Cook (captain, Essex)

2. Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire)

3. Nick Compton (Middlesex)

4. Joe Root (Yorkshire)

5. James Vince (Hampshire)

6. Ben Stokes (Durham)

7. Jonny Bairstow (wicket-keeper, Yorkshire)

8. Moeen Ali (Warwickshire)

9. Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)

10. Steven Finn (Middlesex)

11. James Anderson (Lancashire)

Steven Finn was picked as the third seamer above Ball.

Finn missed the World T20 through injury but his record of 113 test wickets at an average of just over 28 saw him selected ahead of Ball.
