Residents still not allowed home after New Basford factory fire

VIDEO: Pauline Shaw speaks about why they cannot yet go home

Some residents living nearby to a factory that caught fire in New Basford are still not allowed to go home.

The fire took place on Friday July 8 at around 7.30pm on High Church Street where a clothing factory went up in flames.

Pauline and Kenneth Shaw live near where the fire happened and are two of the affected residents who cannot go back home due to asbestos surrounding their home.

We don’t know how long we’ll be here yet

Kenneth Shaw said: “We were worried about some of the stuff in there.

“We have been allowed back in briefly but we can only go in for 15 minutes once every day.”

Pauline Shaw said: “We don’t know exactly how long we’ll be here for so we’ll be here for a bit longer yet; hopefully we’ll be home by the end of the week!”

Mr Shaw talked about his experience of what happened.

He said: “The asbestos was exploding above my head.”

“I was in the kitchen in the morning and I simply heard the factory roof next door explode.

“I phoned the fire brigade and had to get Pauline out of bed and we then ran outside to the car park.”
