Television show Robot Wars is returning for a new series – but won’t be coming back to its original studio home in Nottinghamshire.

The programme ran for seven years from 1998 to 2004 and was filmed in a custom-built arena at the former RAF Newton station, near Bingham.

It has now been commissioned for a two-series comeback on BBC 2.

But BBC bosses have announced the new version of the show will be filmed at an arena in Glasgow.

Kim Shillinglaw, Controller of BBC Two said: “Robot Wars is an absolute TV classic and I’m thrilled to be updating it for the next generation of viewers.

“With new technological advances making for an even more exciting and immersive experience, this is a fantastic example of the kind of content-rich factual entertainment that BBC Two excels at.”

The show, which features custom-made remote control robots fighting pitched battles in front of an audience, gained a cult following when it was first aired.

Its original list of presenters included Jeremy Clarkson and Craig Charles.
