Nottingham’s oldest surviving cinema is celebrating its 80th birthday this week.
The Savoy, based on Derby Road, Lenton opened on 7 November 1935.
It’s since survived the arrival of television, home video, multiplex rivals and DVDs.
The movie theatre’s general manager, Paul Scotton said: “It’s really special to me. I’ve been managing here three years now and I’m really proud to be part of its history. There’s not many businesses around Nottingham that have lasted this long.”
It’s first showing was musical Flirtation Walk, starring Dick Powell.
To celebrate their 80th anniversary, the Savoy is putting on a week of special events;
Monday: All films £3.75 all day
Tuesday: Special screening of Back to the Future
Wednesday: Special screening of The Italian Job
Thursday: Silverscreen Italian Job showing + social
Friday: 80 free tickets to be won
Saturday: £1 showing of Minions
