Notts County “chomping at the bit” to get underway

Video: Manager John Sheridan sets his stall out ahead of the new season

Notts County get their Sky Bet League 2 campaign underway this weekend and are confident that last season will not be repeated.

The Magpies finished 17th in League 2 last season after having lost exactly half of their 46 league games but have had promising preseason performances.

Notts County kick off their season with a trip to Yeovil on Saturday (August 6) at 3pm.

It’s all about Saturday and getting off to a good start

Manager John Sheridan is pleased with the way the players have performed during preseason but knows work starts on Saturday.

He said: “We’ve trained really well and the boys have worked their socks off during preseason.

“It’s massively important for fitness and hopefully it will stand us in good stead for the season and I think our performances in games have been good.

“We’ve got a formation we look comfortable with but it’s all about Saturday’s game now and getting off to a good start if we can.”

If I see someone not doing what they should be, I’ll tell them

Sheridan realises that last season was difficult but is hoping his managerial style and transfers will ensure that it is not repeated in the new campaign.

He said: “It’s difficult when you concede a lot of goals and lose games like we did last season, it’s really hard and the fans get disgruntled.

“I’m the type of manager where if I see someone not doing something small that they should be, I’ll tell them and I preferred that as a manager; I’d rather he get a grip of me and made sure it stuck in my head what he wants.

“I think it’s important that experienced players has been brought in, especially with what happened last season.”

You’re playing in front of a big crowd at a big stadium

Notts County’s number nine Vadaine Oliver, who is on loan from York City, is relishing the opportunity to call Meadow Lane his home this season.

He said: “My aim this season is to get my fitness back, knuckle down, learn from the players that are here and score goals.

“I want to make as much of the time I’ve got here as I can.

“I’m at a club now where you’re playing in front of a big crowd at a big stadium and we’re going to be pushing for promotion.”
