Video: Rebecca Tolputt speaks about her trip

A Nottingham Trent student has cycled 4,300 miles across America to raise money for cancer research at her university.

Rebecca Tolputt, a 23 year old student from Toton, is in her third year of studying business management and entrepreneurship and spent the summer cycling from Seattle to New York.

Rebecca has so far raised £3,800 in total and is hoping that £4,300 can be reached so that she has raised a pound for every mile she covered in aid of the John van Geest Centre.

Speaking about her journey, Rebecca revealed she had some ‘scary’ encounters.

She said: “There was one scary moment when I got invited to a cowboy’s house and he said he’d have me for the night.

“He started showing me his collection of 20 guns so I was agreeing with everything he was saying because there was a lot of guns!

“I got out of there quite quickly in the morning!”

I hadn’t touched a road bike until three years ago

Cycling is something that Rebecca has taken up recently.

Rebecca said: “I hadn’t touched a road bike until three years ago.

“I remember doing my first 50 miles on my 21st birthday and it was a huge challenge I set myself.

“I was so nervous and was so knackered to do the mileage and can’t believe that was only two years ago!”
