Solar energy success in Nottingham

Nottingham City Council has warned against any dimming in the Governments support in the solar energy sector.

The council has always led the way in regards to the local authorities involvement in this sector and has investing in solar power to help safeguard against fuel poverty through free electricity for tenants.

There are over 3,000 homes in social housing with solar panels and the council has now started installing solar panels at its sport and leisure centres.

Nottingham Tennis Centre was the first leisure centre to get solar panels followed recently by the Harvey Hadden sports village, which also boasts the UK’s first publicly-owned car park to have a solar canopy.

The council has seen an increase in the desire for solar panels and has a significant number of installations planned for the last quarter of the year.

Councillor Alan Clarke, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Energy and Sustainability said: “The solar sector has come such a long way, following significant investment from the government until now. The UK and Nottingham have particularly built such a strong skills base it would be senseless to stop now.”

“Solar power is an important part of Nottingham City Council’s strategy to reduce fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions.”
