A 12-year-old girl who raised £10,000 for the Queen’s Medical Centre has died after a long battle with cancer.

Sophie Robinson, from Lincoln, launched a fundraising campaign after being diagnosed with an advanced form of brain cancer called Medulloblastoma.

The appeal captured the hearts and minds of hundreds of thousands of people after Sophie and her family posted updates about the fundraising and her condition online.

A statement posted on Sophie’s Cancer Journey Facebook page today read: “Our beautiful Sophie gained her blue princess dancing wings at 2.55am this morning.

“Her passing was very peaceful and calm in the arms of her parents at home, surrounded by family.

“She fought so hard and always had the biggest smile on her face through the hardest and toughest things she should never have had to go through.”

The money is for Nottingham’s Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre, where she was being treated.

She was determined to help other families that were experiencing the same difficulties and to help provide improved treatment and a cure for the disease.

Sophie raised a total of £35,000 across all of her fundraising efforts.

People have been changing their Facebook profile pictures to an image of a blue candle in support of the family.

The statement added: “You inspired so many people, you warmed so many people’s hearts and we love you, we miss you.

“Let’s turn Facebook full of candles for one amazing Sophie.”

Sophie is a very special young lady

Family friends helped to kick-start the fundraising campaign in June last year by hosting a fish and chip supper.

And in August, Sophie hosted her own bravery and courage party for children from across Lincolnshire.

The event was a sell-out, with 180 people squeezing into their local social club enjoying a party and a disco.

At the time of the £10,000 donation in September, community fundraising manager at the University of Nottingham, Andrew Legge said: “Sophie is a very special young lady and we are hugely grateful for all her fundraising achievements.”
