Storm Barney leaves trail of damage across Nottinghamshire

Tree blows down on A60 at Mansfield during Storm Barney Nov 2015

Winds of up to 70mph left fallen trees, broken signs and battered shop fronts as Storm Barney blew across Nottinghamshire.

The wet and windy weather began at around 4pm yesterday and continued through the night, with the Met Office warning more unsettled weather is on the way.

Western Power says around 20 homes in Hyson Green are without electricity this morning.

On Carrington Street in the city, several shop front hoardings and fences were blown over.

Taxi driver Kelvin Leonard narrowly avoided being badly hurt as he drove towards Mansfield at around 10pm.

He was driving through Thieves Wood on the A60 when a tree crashed down in front of him (pictured above).

He said: “I had to just jam the brakes on. Twenty seconds later and it would have been on top of my car. It was a good job I wasn’t going a bit faster, it was only 20 feet away.

“Other cars started stopping as well and within a few minutes there were 30-odd people. We all got together and pulled it off the road so everyone could get through again.”

East Midlands Trains reported that services were delayed between Nottingham and Lincoln on Wednesday evening after an obstruction on the line.

And passengers on board the service said that the driver got off the train in the dark and heavy weather to inspect the obstruction.

The Met Office says gusts of up to 40mph are expected to continue throughout Wednesday, although the weather is expected to settle as the day goes on with outbreaks of sunshine and showers.
