Video: Robert Sanderson on the closure of Theatre Royal for two months
Nottingham’s Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall will be closed for two months in summer next year as part of a major redevelopment.
The £3.3m project will see the roof terraces redeveloped creating a new 200 seat restaurant, a new theatre square and revamped bars.
Minor work is currently taking place to the front of the Concert Hall to improve the ticket office and entrance.
It will not be closed much more than over a usual summer period
Managing director of Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall Robert Sanderson said: “Phase One, which is this summer, is the smaller part of transforming the entrance to the Concert Hall.
“It will also see the modernisation of the box office which will make it much more user friendly.
“Next summer, Phase Two will take place which will be a real transformation; it will not be closed much more than over a usual summer period.”
Summer is the least expensive time to do it
Mr Sanderson ensured that the finances have been taken into consideration.
He said: “The project is costing about £3.5m and £1.2m came as a grant from Arts Council England.
“There won’t be a significant loss and what there is we have budgeted for as any organisation that shuts for a period time would do.
“Summer is the least expensive time to do it – if we did it in November for example it would be suicide.”
