Turban saves Nottingham shopkeeper in attack

A Nottingham shopkeeper’s turban saved him from serious injury after he was hit over the head with a whiskey bottle.

Gurpal Singh, 42, was attacked at his shop, The Family Shopper, on June 9 after confronting a shoplifter.

Mr Singh said: “He was trying to nick some chocolate and one of the staff members told me so I stopped him. He gave me the chocolate but when I turned away from him he banged a bottle on my head”.

Mr Singh was taken to the QMC where he was treated for his head injuries and was not able to return to work for five days after the attack.

He said: “At the time I didn’t know he had hit me because my brain went numb and I didn’t hear anything. I didn’t know if I had been punched but then I saw the glass everywhere”.

Due to building works taking place at the time the CCTV Cameras were turned off.

Mr Singh said: “In the future I will think before I stop someone because when the man was stopped we found a knife in his pocket, so you don’t know what someone is carrying”.

The shoplifter, Ronald Richardson, 49, of Conisborough Terrace was given a 16-week custodial sentence, suspended for a year. He admitted assaulting Mr Singh, and to threatening behaviour towards the shop owner.

Mr Singh told Notts TV that he is pleased Meadows residents and his customers have been really supportive.
