A university student has made an interactive map of music venues, shops and festivals in Nottinghamshire.

Second year University of Nottingham student Madelaine Williams, from Manchester, who studies music, made the map as part of a placement module focusing on marketing.

She said: “I made it at first just to see what was going on and where and to see if it would be helpful for students looking at coming to Nottingham to study music.

“I’d never used Google Maps for this purpose before.

“I wanted to use some of my knowledge of music to do something that’s not just singing.”

Madelaine is a singer and is currently preparing for a recital but is enjoying her module focusing on applying music to other areas.

She said: “This module is one of the best I have ever done.

“I wanted to see what marketing was like in relation to the arts which has been useful being a musician myself.”

The map is something Madelaine wants to keep up-to-date and developing in the future.

She said: “There is still a long way it could go – I want to include a brief description of each place and some quotes from people that have been to each one.

“Even if it’s not me that keeps it up-to-date, I’m sure the university will, but you never know it could be an ongoing sort of thing for me.

“This map has made a lot of other departments at uni think that they can make something similar and it’s something they’re looking into.”
