A group of travellers camped on a West Bridgford nature area are expected to stay for a week.

The group arrived over the weekend at Collington Common, close to the Rushcliffe Arena site off Rugby Road.

Notts Police and environmental health officers from Rushcliffe Borough Council, which owns the land, have spoken to the travellers.

Around ten caravans and ten families are on the land and the authority says it is asking them to move on quickly because the site is home to wild flowers and is part of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s Blue Butterfly Scheme conservation project.

In a statement the council said: “At the present time they are hoping to stay in the area for one week. The council is following its normal procedures and looking to move the travellers on as soon as possible before irreparable damage is done to the wildlife in the area.

“Nottinghamshire Police will be patrolling the area in high-visibility jackets ensure public safety in the area is maintained. Members of the public are advised to give the encampment a wide berth.”
