Temperatures dropped below freezing in Notts on Wednesday evening as parts of the county were covered in a dusting of unexpected snow.

People in Mansfield, Arnold and Kirkby-In-Ashfield were treated to a light sprinkling of snow at around 11pm.

Despite the cold overnight snap, temperatures in the county are expected to reach 9 degrees celsius on Thursday and Friday, rising to 11 over the weekend.

Bank Holiday Monday is set to be a warm 13 but increased chances of rain will put a damper on the national day off.

The Met Office says: “After a cold and mainly dry start with some sunny spells, scattered showers will develop through the morning and into the early afternoon. Thickening cloud will bring outbreaks of rain to most parts by the evening.”

Pictures of snow covered cars, roads and gardens were posted on Notts TV’s Facebook Page.

Freezing families also sent in comments of what was happening in their areas.

Claire Sinclaire said: “[It] was even worse than this pic shows in Mansfield! The hail froze the road in the few mins I drove then snow. Frozen! I skid in a 4 wheel drive 2m doing 15mph! Crazy weather – lovely lightening.”

Joan North said: “Snow, lighting thunder in Mansfield Woodhouse.”

Natalie Taylor worried that her wedding would be dusted with snow, she said: “Just typical, better stop for my wedding on Saturday!”
