New Forest boss Philippe Montanier believes that having a strong defence is the key to success this season and starting well is crucial.

The Reds boss is impressed with the response he’s got from players both new and old in adapting to how he wants the team to play.

Forest have won four out of five preseason games so far with the Reds playing Hull City in their last friendly tomorrow.

The ambition is to reach the highest level

He said: “I’m very impressed with the mentality of the players as they have been very receptive and have progressed well.

“We don’t know the level of the opponents at this stage but the ambition is to play as well as we can and to reach the highest level that we can.

“If we have good discipline during training then we will be better and stronger to play the upcoming matches.”

It’s important to have a good start

Montanier recognises that Forest need to hit the ground running when the Reds start their competitive campaign.

He said: “It’s important to have a good start although the end is the most important part.

“We’ve had some good results in preseason but I’ve mainly been looking at applying the defensive and offensive work that we do during the week onto the pitch.

“Winning the games are good for confidence but is not important for me at the moment as we continue to prepare.”
