The drink driving law was introduced in 1966.

More than 200 people were caught drink or drug driving in the first seven weeks of a Notts Police campaign.

Officers are running a seasonal crackdown to catch people getting behind the wheel while unfit after Christmas parties.

In November 144 people were tested, caught and charged across Notts – the highest-ever monthly total recorded by the force.

And in the first three weeks of December another 63 people were charged.

Chief Insp Phil Vickers said: “It is concerning that we have seen record numbers of people charged with driving under the influence, but the numbers also show how proactive we have been in taking drivers who think they are above the law off the road.

This serves as a reminder

“This also serves as a reminder to the public who are thinking about driving under the influence this Christmas that we will find you and bring you to justice.”

Officers in Notts are also using roadside drug testing equipment for the first time during a December operation.

Police regularly run Christmas drink-drive campaigns but the Nottinghamshire force has been running more high-profile crackdowns since December 2013, when 12 people were killed on the county’s roads in a month, including a series of eight deaths from December 17 to 29.

There have so far been two fatalities on the county’s roads this month – both in the same incident.

Shahbaz Bhim, 23, of Gwendolen Road, Leicester, and Shana Sutaria, 24, of Harewood Street, Leicester, both died in a crash on the A46 near Wimerpool on Thursday, December 3.

The cause is still being investigated.

Notts Police are asking anyone with information about people who regularly drink or drug drive to contact them on 101.

Police advice also says people should call 999 if someone is already in a vehicle or about to get into one while drunk or unfit.
