Allegations shouted from the public gallery caused the first county council meeting of the new year to be adjourned this week.
Mickey Summers interrupted the Nottinghamshire County Council meeting on Thursday January 15 by protesting from the public gallery, shouting allegations about historical child abuse.
He reportedly said:
Silence is not justice. You should hang your heads in shame.
Mr Summers, who has waived his anonymity to speak publicly about his alleged abuse, has called for a full public inquiry into child abuse in Nottinghamshire care homes.
The meeting had to be adjourned for around ten minutes after Labour councillors began to walk out when Mr Summers continued to speak from the public gallery.
Councillor Alan Rhodes, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said:
“There was a short adjournment at today’s Nottinghamshire County Council meeting due to a protest in the public gallery, during which allegations about historical sexual abuse were made. We take all allegations of this nature extremely seriously.”
“As such we are committed to supporting the police investigation in every way possible to ensure that anyone responsible is brought to justice. A number of meetings have previously taken place with the person protesting. We listened to his allegations and I share his desire to find out the truth and expose any wrong doing. We will continue to work with the police to ensure that this happens as part of their operation.”
The meeting started again at 11.05am with Councillor Rhodes informing those in the meeting that an ongoing police investigation into the allegations was taking place.
