Ana Konjuh wins Nottingham Aegon Open title

The 17 year old beat Monica Niculescu in the rain delayed final to claim her first title on the WTA tour.

Rain had pushed the final back a day and forced Konjuh to play twice on Sunday, including a semi final win over fifth seed Alison Riske.

The Croat Konjuh showed signs of fatigue as she dropped her first set of the entire tournament but went on to triumph 1-6 6-4 6-2 in Mondays final.

“It’s going to hold a special place in my heart this tournament.”

Niculescu, who had knocked out top seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semi final, won five games in a row as she clinched a one sided opening set.

The teenager, ranked 87th in the world, managed to recover though to go on to win the inaugural Elena Baltacha Trophy, which was named in memory of the former British Women’s number one who died of cancer last year.

“My family watched at home, all the neighbours came to the house and they’re drinking champagne they’re really happy.”

There was one downside for Konjuh however, being only 17 years old she couldn’t claim the champions champagne.

“I am under age so I cannot drink the champagne but I am trying to get one for my coaches so they can enjoy it.” she said.

With this win Konjuh closes in on a spot in the top 50 of the world rankings and can now prepare for Wimbledon next month.
