Broadmarsh car park will close for good on Monday (August 7), paving the way for its demolition and re-building.

Nottingham City Council is shutting the site four weeks after the closure of the Broadmarsh Bus Station.

The demolition and re-build is part of a planned £250 million revamp of the south side of the city, including the redevelopment of the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre.

Nottingham City Council leader councillor Jon Collins said: “The end is in sight for the Broadmarsh Car Park – and I can’t imagine too many people are disappointed.

“We’ve worked hard to pull together new provision for people parking in the city both in and near the area and are confident there will be enough spaces for everyone while we transform the entire Broadmarsh area.

“This is the first major step in redeveloping the Broadmarsh area and it will have its challenges for traffic and people getting round the area.

“However, we’ve done a lot to try and help people and ask you to bear with us as I’m confident it will all be worth the disruption.”

To compensate for the closure, two car parks were opened in July on Canal Street called Sheriff’s Lodge and Broadmarsh East, providing spaces for 280 cars.

But the Broadmarsh Car Park has room for 1,150 spaces, meaning there will be a loss of 870 while a new multi-storey car park is built.

Instead maps point motorists to alternative car parks across town – the next closest multi-storey to the Canal Street car parks is the Arndale/Maid Marian Way car park – with 412.

Further south, Nottingham Station’s car park has 950 spaces.

Plans for the size and position of the new car park have since been drawn up by Nottingham City Council, and will be considered later in the year.

Notts TV reported earlier in July that the redeveloped Broadmarsh shopping centre will open two years later than first planned.
