Four Nottinghamshire schools were forced to close because of a burst water pipe.
The leak on Station Road in Keyworth caused a fountain of water to gush into the air and cut off Keyworth Primary, Crossdale Primary, Willow Brook Primary and South Wolds on Wednesday morning.
Dozens of houses were also left without water following the incident, as supplier Severn Trent attempted to fix the problem.
It was originally anticipated that the pipe would be fixed by 11am, but supplies were not restored until around 4.25pm.
A spokesman for the company said at the time of the leak: “We’ve been in contact with our sensitive customers to make sure they’ve got everything they need and we’ll continue to update everyone affected as the work goes on.
“As you can see from the photos, this is a big burst. Our teams are on site at the burst pipe now and will work around the clock to get it fixed and everything back to normal as quickly as possible.
“As the burst pipe is in the road, unfortunately we may need to close the road to allow our teams to work safely and to keep road users safely away from the work area.
Peter Cresswell, headteacher of Keyworth and Crossdale Primaries, said: “Severn Trent have advised us that there will be no water available to school for several hours due to a burst water main in Plumtree.
“It is therefore necessary to shut the school today.”
Matthew Harrison took to Twitter, says this is the second time the problem had occurred in a year.
He said: “What were you [Severn Trent] doing in summer when the Keyworth water main was being “fixed” for a week! Seriously?! It’s the same place!”
Staff at Severn Trent were seen giving out bottles of water to residents affected by the cut-off before supplies were restored.
