Community Speedwatch groups to be rolled out across Nottingham

Volunteers and police officers are teaming up to tackle speeding traffic with the introduction of a Community Speedwatch scheme.

The initiative gives volunteers a radar speed gun which not only measures speed but also if the driver is using a mobile phone.

Police officers wait further up the road and can pull over and fine anyone who is caught breaking the law.

The scheme has been trialled in parts of Nottinghamshire, such as Calverton, and now looks set to be introduced to the rest of the city.

Kylie Westlake, community beat manager for Calverton, said: “It is a project we are just about to launch help the community deal with issues in their area.”

“So far we’ve had a lot of positive feedback and people are slowing down.”

Pc Westlake added that the project was gathering a lot of interest from members of the public, with a number of people approaching her asking to volunteer.

Home Secretary Theresa May visited Calverton on Tuesday where she said the scheme acted as a deterrent with “fewer cars speeding as a result of people from the community being out and taking action.”
