Councillors push for Arkwright Walk redevelopment contract

Nottingham City Council is looking for a construction company to take charge of their £18 million redevelopment of a Meadows walkway.

The redevelopment plan will involve turning the former shopping centre into a direct route for pedestrians and cyclists from Nottingham train station to Trent Bridge.

Arkwright Walk was suggested earlier in the year by the council as somewhere that needed some life putting back into it and Council Leader Jon Collins wants whoever wins the bid to produce a creative plan for it.

He said: “We’re giving developers an extended tender period for the Meadows housing project so that they can come up with really innovative and robust proposals.

“We want developers to know that Nottingham is very much a development hot spot. We have well-integrated transport, a strong talent pool, possible opportunities arising from devolution and potential for a better return on investment than expensive markets such as London.”

The development will involve building in excess of 120 homes on eight sites with a total area of 1.8 hectares in the Meadows area. This will however mean uprooting more than 100 people from their homes.

Councillor Jane Urquhart, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Housing said: “New private sector properties for sale or rent will further increase the range and type of homes as the neighbourhood continues to go from strength to strength.

This is an exciting time for the Meadows and a real opportunity to enhance connectivity and maximise the regeneration potential of the area.

The sites will be cleared from April 2016 with development expected to start in autumn of the same year.
