Day care charges to soar for Nottingham elderly

Charges for some Nottingham adult social care services are increasing dramatically.

The fees will go up on October 31, Nottingham City Council has confirmed.

Some adults who receive day care, transport to day care and long term support will be affected.

The council says the changes are needed to meet the rising numbers of people who need support, as some of its budgets are cut by central Government.

Traditional day care will rise from £5 to £12 per day, and transport to day care will go up from £5 to £8 per return journey.

The council said its existing policies mean only people who can afford it will be subject to the changes.

It said others will still get fully-subsidised care.

We have to make some tough decisions

Councillor Alex Norris, the authority’s portfolio holder for health, said: “Putting up the price of our services is never going to be popular, but we have to make some tough decisions if we are going to continue to deliver the same high-quality service to more people in the face of ever-diminishing budgets.”

Ruth Rigby, managing director of patient group Healthwatch Nottingham, previously told Notts TV News she was worried some people might give up paying for care even though they still needed it.

Speaking as a consultation on the move was announced in July, she said: “What we want to avoid is people forgoing services and potentially becoming more ill or more disabled, which may lead to people requiring much more intensive care packages.

“If people’s finances are stretched, then people might make the decision to not receive care services to ensure they can pay household bills.”

Around 500 people affected by the new charges will be contacted from October 21, with the new fees coming in ten days later.
