Delay on shale gas exploration application for north Notts

A company’s application to drill for shale gas on land in north Notts is to be delayed.

Island Gas, also known as IGas, wants to explore below ground around Misson Springs, Bassetlaw.

The company submitted an application to carry out test drilling for up to 12 boreholes across four locations back in January.

It is the first stage in a long planning process which could eventually lead to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

Nottinghamshire County Council, which is handling the application, released a statement on Monday saying it “requires additional information to allow a full assessment of all the issues relating to the application”.

It hopes to agree a new timetable for a decision once IGas has responded to the request.

Hydraulic fracking could be on its way to Misson

Once provided, the information will be subject to a period of consultation with the details being released later in the summer.

A spokesman for IGas told Notts TV earlier this year: “The boreholes are one element of baseline monitoring before, during and after any drilling activity and will establish existing groundwater conditions.”

If approved, IGas would begin testing groundwater on the land, a former rocket testing site, which is required by law for any future fracking to go ahead.
