East Midlands Trains ranked in top 10 – but ‘has work to do’ to convince passengers

East Midlands Trains has been ranked ninth best in the UK in a passenger study.

More than 130 people asked by the consumer group Which? ranked their service four stars for reliability and punctuality as well as the availability of seats and condition of the train.

Passengers ranked the cleanliness of the services toilets and carriages with only three stars, and value for money and frequency of service also ranked lower on the scale.

The research also found 58 per cent passengers who travel on East Midlands Trains were happy with the service.

The train provider, which has a contract to serve Nottingham until 2018, came ninth out of 22 services ranked nationally.

A spokesman for East Midlands Trains said: “Independent research from the official watchdog Transport Focus covering more than 50,000 rail passengers a year shows more than eight in 10 customers are happy with our train services.

“But we have more work to do and are investing millions of pounds over the next two years to provide more seats, improved journeys and information, and better value travel.”

“We are also working closely with Network Rail, which manages track and signalling, to improve train punctuality. When things go wrong, we are also committed to putting them right as well as pro-actively helping customers get appropriate compensation.”

Grand Central topped the list as the UK’s best train company with 79 per cent customer score, whilst Thameslink and Great Northern came last at just 46 per cent.
