An acclaimed documentary produced and directed by a Nottingham Trent University graduate is appearing at the city’s Broadway cinema on Monday.

Barney Douglas graduated in 2002 and has just finished directing and producing Warriors,  which follows a group of young Maasai who set up a cricket team in a remote part of Kenya.

The film follows the group as they aim to participate in a cricket tournament in England – and they get more from their journey than they thought they would.

Members use their experiences of travelling to try to convince older members of their culture to reject traditional practices such as female gential mutilation – a ritual carried out in parts of Africa but illegal in many other parts of the world.

I want to leave people with a feeling of hope

Mr Douglas said: “This was a big achievement given some of the difficulties we had to overcome, like a lack of money for one.

“What was really special was that we were able to present people within that community with a voice.

“I want people to watch it and leave the cinema with a feeling of hope.”

Warriors appears at the Broadway at 6.15pm on Monday.
