Get ready Nottingham, Freshers’ Week is finally here

The time has arrived, this weekend Nottingham Trent University is expecting 7,000 freshers to arrive on campus.

It comes after the University of Nottingham welcomed 12,500 new students last weekend.

Nottingham Trent University has been preparing for its intake since as early as February.

Tim Woodman-Clarke, head of student accommodation services said: “Students come into their new homes over both Friday and Saturday across all three campuses.

“We have called what’s called a traffic regulation order put in place so we can makes the streets one way temporarily whilst students arrive. And then we buy all the car parking meters for the weekend so we almost take over the city centre in a little way.”

Nottingham has one of the biggest welcome weeks in the country and everyone is getting ready for the new students arrival.

Jeremiah Anson, Student Union President at Nottingham Trent University said: “To put it lightly a monumental amount of preparation is taking place. All the different parts of the organisation have got their role to play in getting ready for the students to come back.

“We have to get the freshers crew ready but then we also need to plan to run the campaigns we are going to run for the year ahead.

“And then the membership side of things are sorting out the societies, things that are involved with providing a student experience.”

Moving away from home to go to University can be a daunting prospect for students moving into the city this week, Tim Woodman-Clarke said: “These are 18-year-old’s predominantly, leaving home for the first time and that’s full of excitement.”

“But it’s also really nerve-racking and I think we forget that. So the less stress and hassle we can give to people and the more welcoming we can be keeping people at ease, that’s really important.”

In total, Nottingham is bracing itself to welcome just under 20,000 new students this week into the city.
