Hedgehog haven at Stonebridge Farm

The farm’s wildlife gardens, orchards and paddock have provided the perfect haven to feed a young hedgehog family, ready for winter hibernation.

A family of hedgehogs – a mother and three hoglets have been taken care of by the farm after being handed to them by a visitor.

Toni Unsworth, a Gardner at the farm says: “We’ve seen plenty of signs are little family are doing really well and the youngsters aren’t so little any more!”.

“Our gardens alone aren’t big enough for the family to survive. The whole neighbourhood need to play a role in helping these little hedgehogs.”

– Toni Unsworth, Gardner at Stonebridge City Farm.

The farm is appealing for help in the local community in dealing with hedgehogs, as the population is rapidly declining in numbers and leading them to become an endangered species.

Residents of St. Ann’s can help hedgehogs by providing homes for them.

“In return, hedgehogs will be a gardener’s best friend- munching on slugs, caterpillars and vacuuming unwanted invertebrates”: says Ms Unsworth.

A hedgehog home needn’t be specially built, a simple board against a wall will suffice.

Stonebridge City farm provide a sanctuary for lots of native wildlife including bees, birds and butterfly.
